Project Aims:
Grounded in a social harm approach, the aim of this study is to explore how the experience of unmet health and social needs impact people who have been involved with the criminal justice system. Previous research suggests that people involved with the criminal justice system are more likely to have a disability, chronic health conditions and experience mental health difficulties. Previous research also shows that people are more likely to have experienced homelessness, difficult experiences in childhood, including with education, alcohol or substance use or experience financial challenges. However, this body of research has focused on how common it is for people within the criminal justice system to have experienced these difficulties but not what it is like or what impact it has. In partnership with experts by experience, the current study aims to understand how people are impacted by these factors before, during and after a custodial prison sentence, including difficulties with the systems and accessing services. The information from this study will be used to consider where needs aren’t being met for people involved in the criminal justice system and how this can be improved.
What will we do?
Using a qualitative approach the study will explore the perspectives and experiences of justice-involved populations and staff working across prisons, healthcare and third sector organisations. Narrative interviews will be undertaken with people who have experience of a custodial prison sentence to understand health and social needs across the life course; world cafes will be undertaken with staff participants. Justice-involved populations will be invited to produce creative or visual artwork to explore their narratives. Whilst the study will be disseminated through academic channels, and to policy and practice partners via webinars, importantly, produced artwork will also be exhibited, alongside an artistic interpretation of the research findings, bringing results to a wider audience and promoting discussion.
